I don’t know about you, but it was a struggle for me to find my perfect foundation. It still is and that’s why I have two different shades so I can mix and match no matter the season, but that’s just me because I’m super high maintenance.
If you struggle and get overwhelmed in the store with the thousand foundations options out there, you came to the right place. Plus, I have a new printable in the Beauty Library with the Ultimate Guide To Find Your Perfect Foundation, it has a fun quiz & checklist (click here).
The Right Formula
The first thing you need to find is the formula that is suited for your skin, what would be ideal for you? Liquid? Cream? Mineral? But to know this you need to find out your skin type, how do you want your skin to look and what’s the desired end result.
Take The Quiz!
As I mentioned, in my Beauty Library and the Ultimate Guide To Find Your Perfect Foundation printable you can find a super fun quiz that will indicate what’s your ideal foundation formula based on the criteria I mentioned above, so what are you waiting for? Click here to take it!
Your Perfect Foundation Shade
Now that you know your perfect foundation formula, it’s time to match your shade, and for this, you need to determine your skin undertone. Is it warm, cool or neutral? Knowing this information will help you navigate easily in the store because it will eliminate a lot of unnecessary options.
Not sure about your skin undertone? If you’re warm, your skin will lean to gold, yellow or peach colours. If you’re cool, your skin will lean to blue, red or pink; and if you’re neutral, you will have a mix of both, which means, you can wear cool or warm and you’ll look good.

Have also in mind how do you like your coverage, light, medium or full? Your options will change depending on your preference. In my case, I use a CC cream for my day-to-day makeup look, and the one I like is IT Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC+ Cream with SPF 50 ($38, get it here) because it’s very natural and it has buildable coverage, but for special event, I use MAC Pro Longwear Liquid Foundation because it has medium and buildable coverage ($35, get it here)
Finally, decide if you want SPF or not. SPF is essential for your day-to-day, but if you have a special event and will be taking flash photography, you will want to avoid a foundation with SPF because it will give you a flashback.
Test, Test, Test!
Go and play with foundations, try different shades at the store and try to match it in the area of your body that has even colour, like your cheeks or chest. Don’t test the shade on your neck as it can be a shade lighter than the rest of your body.
If you can, test it for a few hours or even a full day, this way you can see if it oxidizes and how long it lasts.
No Likey? Return It!
Something I love about Sephora is that you can try any product and if you’re not happy with it, you can return it! But I understand it can be challenging if you’re getting your foundation at the drugstore. Ask for help at the store, or visit NYX Foundation Finder to see what’s the ideal shade for you.
